As part of the wider M80 and North East Link infrastructure works, AGIG / APA engaged National Australian Pipelines to undertake the construction, testing, commissioning and decommissioning activities associated with the NELP Gas 01 Grimshaw Street Relocation Project.
The project involved the relocation of multiple sections of gas distribution main along Grimshaw Street, Peters Street, Knight Street and Greensborough Road in Watsonia, supporting the delivery of critical transport infrastructure upgrades while maintaining the integrity of the existing gas network.
Works involved the installation of approximately 1,006 metres of DN200 steel gas main, tying into the existing DN150 main within the eastern road verge of Peters Street at the intersection of Grimshaw Street. From there, the alignment extended south through Peters Street and east along Knight Street before crossing beneath the Hurstbridge Rail Line and the North East Link dive structure via pipe jacking methods. The gas main then continued north along the western side of Greensborough Road before crossing to the eastern verge south of the Grimshaw Street intersection and tying back into the existing DN150 main.
Additional works included the installation of approximately two metres of DN50 steel gas main connecting the newly installed DN200 main to the existing DN40 main at the intersection of Grimshaw Street and Greensborough Road. National Australian Pipelines also installed approximately 58 metres of 63mm polyethylene (PE) gas main from the newly laid DN200 main within the western road verge of Greensborough Road and Grimshaw Street, connecting into the existing 40mm customer service supplying St Mary’s Primary School.
The scope further included the decommissioning of the existing DN150 gas main along Grimshaw Street, which had become redundant as part of the relocation works and was prepared for removal by others. Decommissioning works were also completed on the existing DN50 gas main within the south-east road reserve at the intersection of Grimshaw Street and Greensborough Road.
